Darjeeling Complete Travel Guide 2024 — Itinerary, Budget & Honest Tips
We visited Darjeeling in early June — misty mornings, steaming chai, and Kanchenjunga peeking through the clouds. Here's everything we wish we'd known before going, with our real budget breakdown.
Why Darjeeling?
Darjeeling is one of those rare places that delivers on every expectation. The Himalayan backdrop, the colonial charm, the world-famous tea — it's all real. But what makes it special for us is how alive it feels. Small shops, warm locals, mountain air you can actually taste.
We've been three times now, and each trip has been different. This guide is based on our most recent June trip with Bedantika in tow.
How to Get There
By Train + Shared Jeep (Recommended)
The most popular route from Kolkata: take an overnight train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station — there are several trains daily, including the Darjeeling Mail. From NJP, shared jeeps to Darjeeling run all morning (₹200–250/person, ~3.5 hours).
- Train: Kolkata to NJP — ₹300–800 (sleeper to 3AC)
- Shared Jeep: NJP to Darjeeling — ₹200–250/person
- Private Cab: NJP to Darjeeling — ₹2,000–2,500
By Flight
Nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 90 km from Darjeeling. Flights from Kolkata take 45 minutes. Cab from Bagdogra: ₹2,500–3,000.

Where to Stay
For budget travelers, the area around Laden La Road has several guesthouses in the ₹600–1,200/night range. For a better experience, look at homestays around Jalapahar Road — quieter, with mountain views.
Our personal recommendation: Dekeling Hotel — family-run, great views, excellent breakfast, and incredibly helpful staff. Book well in advance for peak season (April–June, October–November).
What to Eat
- Momos — everywhere, and all excellent. Try the Jhol momo at Kunga Restaurant.
- Thukpa — thick noodle soup, perfect for cold mornings.
- Darjeeling Tea — buy directly from Happy Valley Tea Estate for the freshest stock.
- Keventers — colonial-era café on Mall Road, famous for hot chocolate and milkshakes.
- Glenary's Bakery — best pastries and bread in town. Great for a leisurely breakfast.
Honest Tips from Our Trips
- June can be misty (monsoon edges in) — Kanchenjunga may hide. But the tea gardens are lush and crowds are thin.
- Book Tiger Hill taxi the evening before — they fill up fast.
- Carry warm layers even in summer — evenings drop to 8–12°C.
- The Toy Train gets booked weeks in advance during peak season — book on irctc.co.in as soon as you confirm your dates.
- ATMs in Darjeeling can run out of cash on weekends. Carry enough from the plains.
